Drawing Close to God: A Lesson from Parashat Acharei Mot | Amizur Nachshoni

How Can We Truly Draw Near to God?

Parashat Acharei Mot begins with a profound event: the passing of Aharon’s two sons, Nadav and Avihu. The Torah states, “And Hashem spoke to Moshe after the death of the two sons of Aharon, when they drew near before Hashem and died.” Their desire to come close to Hashem (God) ended in tragedy. This raises a deep question: Is it dangerous to seek closeness to Hashem? We are taught that our purpose is to seek connection with our Creator. How can it be that such yearning could bring harm?

The Wisdom of Our Sages

Our sages explain that true spiritual connection requires balance. Rabbi Yeshayahu Pinto, drawing from earlier teachings, explains that just as the moon receives its light from the sun only when it is at the proper distance-if it comes too close, it loses its light-so too, a student must maintain respect and awe for their teacher. Too much familiarity can diminish respect and the ability to receive wisdom.

Respect and Boundaries

The Talmud (Ketubot 103b) relates that Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi instructed his son to “cast a little bitterness among the students.” This means maintaining a respectful distance so that students never forget the honor due to Torah and to their teacher. This is not to create coldness, but to inspire awe and a sincere desire for learning.

The Lesson of Nadav and Avihu

This is the lesson of Nadav and Avihu. The Torah says, “when they drew near before Hashem and died”-they sought to come close without proper boundaries, without the necessary awe. They entered a place that was not theirs, and their souls were consumed.

A Message for All Generations

The Torah instructs: “After Hashem your God you shall walk… and Him you shall fear… and to Him you shall cleave.” The order is precise: first comes awe and respect, then comes true closeness. The greatest connection to Hashem comes from humility, from respect for tradition, and from honoring those who teach us.

Inspiration for Today

Not every excitement or passion leads to true closeness. Sometimes, it is when we stand with humility, with reverence and longing, that we merit true connection to Hashem. In our learning, in our prayers, and in our daily lives, let us remember: the deepest light comes to those who approach with awe, respect, and a humble heart. May we merit to draw close to Hashem in the proper way, with love and awe, and to be filled with light and blessing.
